I’m a long time fan of Polly O’Keary and the Rhythm Method https://www.pollyokeary.com/ and have been following her career, in particular, for a few decades now. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest mostly, in the heart of the Cascade mountains, Polly has been blowing fans away simply by being the powerhouse that she is with her bass and her awesome vocals and witty lyrics.
The first time I saw Polly play I was in a bar in Bellingham,WA in the early 90s. She was playing rock and roll back then, and her set consisted of some cover tunes and some original material. I was immediately riveted by the performance onstage. Imagine my surprise when I ran into her on campus a couple years later at Whatcom Community College. I made the necessary fan appreciation noises and asked her if she’d like to join the Liberals club where we were battling the conservative club (aka the Rush Limbaugh fan club). She eagerly joined us and we put out newsletters and had some fun poking holes in the other clubs arguments. Polly’s daytime career is that of a journalist now, so perhaps the Liberal’s club was helpful along her career path. In any case, she still pursues both writing and music with a focused and undeniable passion. Polly moved on to the blues from rock and roll because she was deeply inspired by Jeff Healey. https://jeffhealey.com/ Healey (March 25, 1966 – March 2, 2008) was a blind guitarist and songwriter who played the guitar masterfully by feel on his lap. He was mainly known for his song “Angel Eyes” and his role in “Road House.” Polly recently joined up with Lighting in a Bottle Records https://www.lightninginabottlerecords.com/ for recording and nominated for Best Regional Act in Seattle. “Black Crow Callin’” is a haunting rendition of one person’s calling toward recovering from booze. The song will stay in your mind for sure. Another song that showcases Polly’s cutting wit and style is “Too Much Like I Care”
Polly is a powerful woman who is not afraid to show up and show down anyone who might stand in her way. She also has what it takes to show off without being remotely conceited. As someone who knows her personally, I have always found her to be humble, personable and willing to learn new things. And she knows how to handle a bass and has killer dance moves on stage. I’m certain she the future is bright and they will go places.
